Zoo Negara is Malaysia's national zoo, spread across a large site in Ulu Klang on the north-eastern edge of Kuala Lumpur. It is an easy family day out from the city, with Malaysian species alongside the usual international zoo residents.
The most interesting angle is local wildlife: hornbills, tapirs, freshwater species, and the animals that connect the city to the forests beyond it. Go early for cooler weather and more active animals, and allow for traffic getting back into central Kuala Lumpur.
