Stadium Merdeka is a landmark of modern Malaysian history: the independence of the Federation of Malaya was proclaimed here on 31 August 1957. The stadium is therefore more than a sports venue, and is best seen as part of a Chinatown and Merdeka heritage walk.
The structure has been preserved as a national monument, with its open bowl and simple modernist lines recalling the early post-independence period.
