Sri Kandaswamy Kovil

Colourful South Indian Hindu temple in Brickfields with a lavishly carved six-tiered gopuram entrance tower

Sri Kandaswamy Kovil is one of Brickfields' most striking landmarks — a South Indian Tamil Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, distinguished by a tall painted gopuram (tower) covered in sculpted deities at the entrance to Jalan Scott. The temple was established in the 1900s to serve the Tamil workers who settled Brickfields, and it remains the spiritual heart of the neighbourhood's Tamil Hindu community.

The interior is fragrant with incense and marigold garlands; devotees come early morning and evening for puja. During Thaipusam, kavadi-bearers make their way through Brickfields before heading to Batu Caves. Non-Hindus are welcome to observe from the outer courtyard. Modest dress is expected.
