Art Museum of Georgia

Fine art museum with outstanding collection of Georgian and European works

The Art Museum of Georgia (also known as the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts) holds the country's most important collection of Georgian decorative and fine art. The highlights are the medieval metalwork — Georgian goldsmiths were among the finest in the medieval world — and the collection of works by Niko Pirosmani, whose large-scale paintings of animals and Georgian peasant life are a national icon.

The museum building is on Gudiashvili Square, close to the Georgian State Art Museum. Together they form the core of Tbilisi's art museum cluster. Allow 90 minutes. Opening hours are 10:00–18:00, closed Monday.

A story
The museum's collection includes a major group of works by Niko Pirosmani, the self-taught Georgian naïve painter who died destitute in 1918 and is now considered one of the most important artists to emerge from the Caucasus. Pirosmani worked mainly on black oilcloth rather than canvas — a technique he developed from the sign-painting he did to survive — which gives his animal paintings and peasant scenes their distinctive dark, velvety quality.
