The Elene Akhvlediani House Museum preserves the home and studio of one of Georgia's most beloved 20th-century painters, set in an old house on Kiacheli Street in the old town. Akhvlediani painted the old Tbilisi streetscapes she could see from her windows — crooked balconied houses, the rooftops of Abanotubani, the lanes of Kala — and her paintings are a visual record of the city as it was in the mid-20th century.
The house is small and intimate: her paintings hang as she arranged them, her brushes and palette are on the workbench, her personal library remains on the shelves. It is the kind of place that takes twenty minutes to see and stays with you for much longer. Opening hours are limited; check current schedule before visiting.
