Bridge of Peace

Futuristic glass-and-steel pedestrian bridge illuminated at night

The Bridge of Peace is a pedestrian bridge linking Rike Park on the left bank of the Mtkvari to the old town, its distinctive curved glass-and-steel canopy stretching 150 metres above the river. Built in 2010, it was part of a wave of contemporary architecture commissioned during the Saakashvili era to signal Georgia's modernisation.

The bridge is most impressive at night when its LED lights create a wave-like illuminated pattern across the canopy. By day, it provides a good view along the river toward Metekhi Church on its cliff and the old town rising behind it. Cross from Rike Park side to reach the old city from the east.

A story
The Bridge of Peace was designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi and inaugurated in 2010 at the initiative of then-President Saakashvili, who commissioned a series of modernist public buildings as part of his urban renewal programme. It carries over 10,000 LED lights that create a programmed light display after dark. Not everyone loves it — critics called it out of place next to the historic old town — but it has become one of the most photographed spots in the city.
