Inside the ruins of Narikala Fortress stands a small single-nave church dedicated to St Nicholas, rebuilt in the 1990s within the original medieval walls. The church is modest in scale but its position — at the summit of the fortress ridge, surrounded by ruined walls on three sides — gives it an atmosphere out of proportion to its size.
It serves as an active chapel, and on clear days the setting is spectacular: the church framed by the roofless walls of the fortress, with the city, river, and mountains visible beyond. The interior has recently painted frescoes in the Georgian tradition. Visit in combination with the fortress walls — the church is the destination at the end of the walk along the upper ramparts.
