Marjanishvili Theatre

Major Georgian theatre in the Marjanishvili district on the left bank

The Marjanishvili Theatre is one of Tbilisi's main stages, located on Agmashenebeli Avenue in the Marjanishvili district on the left bank. The building dates from the 1930s and has a distinctive constructivist facade. The theatre presents Georgian-language productions of classics, contemporary Georgian plays, and international works in translation.

The surrounding neighbourhood is one of the best areas in Tbilisi for an evening stroll and dinner — the streets around the theatre have a good concentration of restaurants and bars with an authentic local feel, less touristy than the old town. The theatre itself is worth considering for an evening's entertainment even for non-Georgian speakers if the production is visually strong.

A story
The theatre is named after the Georgian theatre director Kote Marjanishvili (also known as Konstantin Mardzhanov), who founded it in 1928 after a distinguished career in both Georgian and Russian theatre. Marjanishvili was a pioneer of Georgian theatrical modernism; the productions he staged in the late 1920s before his death in 1933 were considered among the most innovative of the Soviet period.
