Marjanishvili is the neighbourhood on the left bank of the Mtkvari around the metro station of the same name. It has a more local, less polished character than the old town — this is where young Tbilisi professionals live, eat, and drink. The Marjanishvili Theatre is one of the city's main stages; the streets around it are lined with cafes that stay open late.
Aghmashenebeli Avenue passes through here, and the contrast between the grand but faded 19th-century apartment buildings and the lively street-level bars and coffee shops is part of the neighbourhood's appeal. Chugureti, the adjacent quarter, is equally good for wandering: the same mix of elegant decline and genuine café life, with more of the architecture intact.
