Tbilisi Zoo

City zoo near Mtatsminda, notable for its dramatic flooding history

Tbilisi's zoo sits at the foot of Mtatsminda hill, flanking the Vere river gorge. It is a working city zoo with a range of animals including big cats, bears, and various Georgian native species. The facilities are considerably improved since the catastrophic 2015 flood that destroyed much of the original zoo and sent animals through the city streets.

The rebuilt sections are well-maintained, and the hillside setting makes for an interesting layout — the zoo climbs the slope in terraces rather than lying flat. For visitors with children it is a worthwhile couple of hours; for others, the story of the 2015 flood is the main reason to know the place exists.

A story
In June 2015, catastrophic flooding caused by a night-time storm sent a wall of water and debris through the Vere river gorge and directly through the zoo. Walls collapsed, cages broke open, and dozens of animals escaped into the city. A hippopotamus was found in Freedom Square. A white lion wandered through the streets until it was shot by police. Nineteen people were killed; the zoo lost over 300 animals. The zoo has since been rebuilt but the flood remains one of Tbilisi's most traumatic recent memories.
