The Tbilisi Sea — officially the Tbilisi Reservoir — is a large artificial lake on the Iori River about 10 km north of the city centre. Despite its informal name, it is modest in size by any standard, but its sandy beach and surrounding parkland make it a popular summer destination for Tbilisi residents who want a quick escape from the heat.
The reservoir is most notable as the setting for the Chronicle of Georgia monument, which rises from the hillside above the southern shore. The drive or taxi ride out here gives a good sense of the semi-arid landscape that surrounds Tbilisi — the contrast between the green city and the dry, rocky hills around it is striking. The beach area has cafes and can be crowded at weekends.
