A branch of the State Historical Museum housed in the Chambers of the Romanov Boyars on Varvarka Street, just steps from Red Square. The building itself dates to the 15th century and is one of the oldest surviving civil structures in Moscow.
Inside, small rooms with low vaulted ceilings have been furnished to recreate the living quarters of a wealthy boyar family. You'll find household articles, needlework, weaponry, and books from a personal library. Among the more unusual exhibits are peasant rainwear woven from birch bark and a tiled stove where every tile carries a different painted scene.
The museum is compact — a visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Nearest metro: Kitay-Gorod.
