Marfo-Mariinsky Convent was founded in 1908 by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna as a charitable religious community. Its white Art Nouveau churches, designed by Aleksey Shchusev with medieval Novgorod influences, hold frescoes, mosaics, and carved details that make the convent a quiet architectural stop south of central Moscow.
