The Design Museum moved to its current home in the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington in 2016, a vast improvement on its cramped original space on Shad Thames. The permanent collection — Designer Maker User — covers the history of design from mass production to the present day, and is free. It includes everything from iconic posters and chairs to the Apple Mac.

Special exhibitions focus on individual designers, movements, or objects and are worth the admission charge. The building itself, with its hyperbolic paraboloid copper roof from the 1960s, is architecturally notable.

The in-house shop is one of the better design shops in London. Nearest tube: High Street Kensington.
