The Electric, on Portobello Road, is one of the oldest working cinemas in the country, opened in 1910 and beautifully restored behind its Edwardian façade. Inside it is the opposite of a multiplex: leather armchairs, footstools, two-seater sofas at the back, and even beds in the front row, with a bar serving drinks you can take to your seat.
It is a Notting Hill institution and a treat to see a film here, whether a new release or a classic. Tickets cost more than an ordinary cinema, but the comfort and the room justify it. Combine it with a Saturday on Portobello Road and a meal nearby for a thoroughly Notting Hill afternoon.
