The Serpentine Gallery is small, free, and built around temporary contemporary art exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. Its size is part of the appeal: you can see a show without losing half a day. In summer, the annual Serpentine Pavilion brings a new architect-designed structure to the lawn nearby, often as interesting as the gallery show itself.
