Camden Town

London's market-and-music heartland — canalside stalls, live venues, and alt culture

Camden has been London's capital of alternative culture since the punk years, and it still trades on noise, leather, and crowds. The draw is the sprawl of markets around Camden Lock and the Regent's Canal — Camden Market, the Stables, and the lanes off Camden High Street — selling street food from every continent, vintage clothes, records, and a great deal of tourist tat, all under a permanent press of people that peaks at the weekend.

The other half of Camden's identity is live music. The neighbourhood's venues launched generations of British bands, and the Roundhouse, KOKO, the Jazz Café, and the Electric Ballroom still pull serious line-ups most nights. Walk the towpath between Camden Lock and Regent's Park to escape the throng, then come back for the gigs. It is brash, grimy, and not to everyone's taste — but nowhere else in London feels quite like it.
