Museo de Arte Popular

Folk art from across Mexico, in an Art Deco former fire station

Address Revillagigedo 11

The Folk Art Museum opened in 2006 in a beautiful 1928 Art Deco building that had served the city as a fire station. The collection is one of the best surveys anywhere of Mexican folk and craft traditions: alebrijes (the brightly painted papier-mâché figures from Oaxaca), Talavera ceramics from Puebla, Huichol bead and yarn paintings, Catrina figures, and a constantly changing programme of temporary exhibitions devoted to single craft regions.

The shop is one of the best places in town to buy folk art at non-tourist prices. The museum is also the official organiser of the annual alebrije parade that fills the Paseo de la Reforma each October — giant papier-mâché monsters paraded from the Zócalo to Chapultepec. Closed Mondays.
