Museo Tamayo

Striking modernist museum of international contemporary art

Address Paseo de la Reforma 51, Bosque de Chapultepec

The Museo Tamayo sits among the trees of Chapultepec Park, a low concrete-and-marble building that won its architects the country's top prize when it opened in 1981. It was founded by the painter Rufino Tamayo to house the collection of international modern art he had assembled — work by Picasso, Miró, Warhol, Bacon and others — which he donated to the Mexican people, along with his own paintings.

Today it programmes some of the most ambitious contemporary art exhibitions in the city, in galleries lit partly by skylights and arranged around split levels that step down into the hillside. It makes an easy pairing with the Anthropology Museum a short walk away, and the building itself is reason enough to visit.
