Volcan Xitle is the dormant volcano whose eruption around the 3rd century buried the ancient city of Cuicuilco under lava. Trails lead through the wooded slopes and across volcanic terrain, giving a very different side of Mexico City from the central museums and plazas.
The hike is best treated as an outdoor excursion rather than a casual city stroll. Bring water, sun protection, and footwear that can handle rough lava rock and forest paths.
