The 1984 Winter Olympics put Sarajevo on the world map, and the bobsled and luge track on Mount Trebević was one of the showcase venues. Three years after the Olympics ended, the siege began. The track was shelled, abandoned, and used as a military position. Today it stands in a state of spectacular post-war deterioration — concrete tubes covered in graffiti, sections of the course collapsed or swallowed by vegetation, the timing tower a hollow ruin.
The track has become one of Sarajevo's more remarkable atmospheric sites. It can be reached by a short cable car ride from the city (the cable car was rebuilt after the war) followed by a hike, or directly by the road from the city. Walking the course — past Soviet-style graffiti, twisted metal, and urban decay slowly being reclaimed by the forest — is a strangely beautiful experience. The views over the city from the upper sections of the track are excellent.
