Gallery 11/07/95

Gallery 11/07/95 is Sarajevo's dedicated memorial to the Srebrenica genocide, housed in a street-level gallery near the old town. The exhibition consists primarily of large-format photographs from the aftermath — the exhumation of mass graves, the identification of remains, the faces of victims from before the war — accompanied by survivor testimonies and forensic documentation.

The photographs were made in the years following 1995 by documentary photographers working with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. They are extremely powerful and extremely difficult. The exhibition is not made to shock — it is made to bear witness, and the clinical attention to forensic detail is more devastating than any dramatic presentation could be. This is not a visit to take lightly or to rush through. Allow at least an hour, and accept that you may need to sit quietly for a while afterward.

A story
The gallery is named for its date of foundation: 11 July 1995, the day Serb forces under General Ratko Mladić entered Srebrenica and began the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys — the worst mass atrocity in Europe since World War II.
