Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide (War Museum)

Opened in 2016, this museum documents the crimes committed during the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with particular focus on the siege of Sarajevo and the genocide at Srebrenica. The collection includes photographs, testimonies, personal effects, and documentary evidence — presented without softening or diplomatic equivocation.

The museum is not an easy visit. The photographs, many taken by wartime journalists, are graphic and upsetting. The testimonies of survivors — played in the multimedia rooms — are more devastating still. But it is essential context for understanding the city you are walking through, and the work of the curators in preserving and presenting this material is serious and important. Allocate at least two hours. Families with young children should assess the content carefully before visiting.
