Festina Lente Bridge

Festina Lente is a pedestrian bridge over the Miljacka River near the National Library, designed by the Sarajevo architect Nerma Durmiš-Harčević and completed in 2012. Its distinctive feature is a loop in the middle of the bridge — the walkway spirals upward and back, so that to cross the river you first walk halfway across, climb the loop, and then descend to complete the crossing.

The design provoked considerable debate when it was built — some felt it was too whimsical for a city still processing its wartime trauma, others welcomed the lightness. Whatever you think of the concept, it is a striking piece of urban design and the view from the loop's apex — over the Miljacka with the Vijećnica and Baščaršija in both directions — is excellent. Walk it in the early morning for the best light on the river.

A story
"Festina lente" (Make haste slowly) is a paradoxical Latin motto associated with various Renaissance figures, particularly the printer Aldus Manutius whose symbol was an anchor and dolphin. The bridge's loop design — a bridge that turns back on itself — is a literal interpretation of the paradox.
