Vrelo Bosne (Source of the Bosna)

Vrelo Bosne is the spring source of the Bosna River, about 12 kilometres southwest of central Sarajevo in a forested park at the foot of Mount Igman. The springs well up from the base of the mountain in pools of extraordinarily clear water — turquoise in certain light, and cold year-round. The surrounding park is full of old plane trees, wooden bridges, and streams running through the grass.

It is a favourite day trip for Sarajevans, who come to walk, picnic, and ride horse-drawn carriages along the alley of plane trees from the park entrance to the springs. In autumn the foliage is spectacular. On clear days, the view back toward Sarajevo through the trees includes the minarets of the city against the surrounding mountains. Easily reached by tram to the last stop (Ilidža) and then a short walk or carriage ride. Allow half a day to do it properly.
