Martyrs' Memorial Cemetery Kovaci is one of Sarajevo's starkest reminders of the 1992-95 war. The white grave markers climb the hillside above the old town, with the tomb of Alija Izetbegovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina's first post-independence president, at the centre. It is a sobering stop, but an important one if you want to understand the city beyond its cafe streets and Ottoman lanes.
