Stari Grad (Old Town) is the Ottoman-period neighbourhood encompassing Baščaršija and the streets immediately surrounding it — the tightest concentration of historical buildings, mosques, hans, and craft workshops in Sarajevo. It is the most visited part of the city by a significant margin, and for good reason: nowhere else in Bosnia is the Ottoman architectural tradition this dense and this well-preserved.
The neighbourhood rewards walking without a plan. Between the main tourist lane and the residential streets above are hans (Ottoman inns) with courtyard restaurants, hidden mosque gardens, and alley workshops where craftsmen work in near-obscurity. The streets north of the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, climbing toward the Yellow Bastion, are quieter and more residential, with wooden-shuttered houses that would not look out of place in Istanbul.
