The 1984 Winter Olympics was the defining international event of socialist Yugoslavia's final decade, and the Olympic Museum near the city centre documents it with considerable pride and some nostalgia. The exhibition covers the preparations, the events, and the aftermath — including the destruction of the Olympic venues during the siege.
The juxtaposition is painful and deliberately presented: photographs of the torch ceremony and packed stadiums sit near images of the same venues shelled, burned, and overgrown. The bobsled track, the ski jumps, and the biathlon range all appear in both registers — before and after. For visitors who know the 1984 games through television, seeing what the war did to those same sites is sobering. The museum is small and can be seen in an hour; combine with a visit to the bobsled track itself for the full picture.
