Sebilj Fountain

The Sebilj is a wooden Ottoman fountain in the centre of Baščaršija, built in 1753 and the symbolic heart of the old town. A kiosk-shaped structure decorated with carved wooden screens and a dome, it dispenses running water to passers-by — originally from a local spring, now from the municipal supply. Dozens of pigeons occupy the surrounding square on most days, which has given it the name Pigeon Square (Trg golubova).

The current fountain is a reconstruction from 1891 (the original was moved to a different location), but it is faithful to the Ottoman original in style and sits comfortably in the surrounding streetscape of 16th-century hans and caravanserais. It is the most photographed single object in Sarajevo, and finding an angle without a tour group in it requires either patience or very early mornings.

A story
A Sarajevo saying holds that anyone who drinks from the Sebilj fountain will return to Sarajevo. Given the extraordinary number of people who have returned voluntarily — including war correspondents, aid workers, and tourists — the fountain makes a reasonable case for the legend.
