Skenderija Cultural Centre

Skenderija is a large multi-purpose cultural and sports complex built in the late 1960s as a showcase of Yugoslav modernism — a blocky, ambitious structure that served as an exhibition centre, sports arena, and venue for the 1984 Winter Olympics. It still functions as the main indoor arena for Sarajevo, hosting concerts, sporting events, and trade fairs.

The complex is also a gathering point for the city's youth culture and nightlife, with several bars and clubs operating in and around the building's lower levels. The architecture is dated in the best possible way — confident, massive, and unapologetically from the era of socialist Yugoslavia's high ambitions. The approach along the Miljacka riverbank at night, with the complex lit against the water, has a strange grandeur that is hard to account for given the building's programmatic modesty.
