Kazandžiluk (Coppersmiths' Street)

Kazandžiluk is the most famous single street in Baščaršija — a narrow lane lined with coppersmiths' workshops that has been dedicated to the craft since the 16th century. The coppersmiths still work here today, hammering out džezva coffee pots, trays, and decorative items from sheet copper with the same hand techniques that have been used for 500 years. The sound of hammering drifts across the square.

Prices are reasonable by European standards for handmade work. A quality džezva costs 20–50 euros depending on size and decoration; a large decorative tray might run to 150 euros. The workshops are the real thing — not imported goods dressed up as local craft, but actually made in front of you. If you buy something, have it wrapped properly for transport; copper dents easily.
