The Old Orthodox Church (Stara pravoslavna crkva) in Baščaršija is one of the oldest churches in Sarajevo, built in the 16th century (though the exact date is disputed). Unlike the grander Serbian Orthodox churches built in the Austrian period, this one retains the humble, almost domestic scale of a congregation that had to practise quietly under Ottoman rule — churches were permitted but not encouraged to be visually impressive.
The attached Treasury (Muzej stare pravoslavne crkve) contains a remarkable collection of medieval icons, vestments, and manuscripts, including pieces brought to Sarajevo from Serbian monasteries during various waves of flight from Ottoman expansion. The collection is small but of high quality. The church itself is still in active use and has the slightly lived-in quality of a genuinely functioning religious space rather than a museum piece.
