Moomin Museum

The Moomin Museum within Vapriikki holds the world's most comprehensive collection of original Tove Jansson illustrations and artworks related to the Moomin world. The centrepiece is the Moomin house — a detailed scale model of the Moominhouse with illuminated rooms, built by Jansson herself over many years.

The museum presents the Moomins as literature and art rather than as a brand, which gives it a different quality from the commercial Moomin experiences that have proliferated in Finland and Japan. The exhibitions include original drawings for the comic strips and books, letters, and personal artefacts from Jansson's life. Adults without children find it as absorbing as families. Budget 90 minutes.

A story
The Moomin Museum holds the only permanent collection of original Tove Jansson Moomin artwork in the world — drawings, paintings, and the elaborate three-dimensional Moomin house dioramas she constructed over decades. Jansson never wanted a theme park; this is closer to what she had in mind — a careful, slightly melancholy presentation of the Moomin world that honours the originals' emotional depth rather than reducing them to merchandise.
