Tampere Theatre is one of the two major theatres in the city — the other being the Tampere Workers' Theatre — and one of the largest in Finland. The current building dates from 1913 and sits directly on the Hämeenkatu, Tampere's main street. Programming covers mainstream Finnish drama, musicals, and dance, with most productions in Finnish.
The Theatre is most interesting to visitors as an architectural landmark and as context for Tampere's strong theatrical tradition. The Tampere Theatre Festival each August is one of Finland's major cultural events and includes international productions with English surtitles.
