Väinö Linna Square

Väinö Linna Square is a courtyard in the heart of the old Finlayson factory area, named after Finland's most celebrated 20th-century novelist, who was born in Urjala but grew up working class in the shadow of these very factories. The square has been created within the factory complex and is now surrounded by restaurants, studios, and creative businesses.

In summer the courtyard hosts outdoor events and markets. The reference to Väinö Linna is apt: his novels — particularly 'Here Under the North Star', a trilogy covering the Finnish Civil War and its aftermath — are set in precisely the social world these factories created, and reading even a chapter of that trilogy before visiting Tampere adds a lot.
