Särkänniemi is Tampere's main amusement and leisure park, occupying a forested headland on the north shore of Lake Näsijärvi. It includes roller coasters and rides, an aquarium, a planetarium, a children's zoo, and the Näsinneula Observation Tower. The park has operated since 1966 and is the most-visited attraction in the Tampere region.
The setting is genuinely attractive: rides and facilities are scattered through forested terrain above the lake, with views over the water at every turn. Outside peak summer season (July especially), crowds are manageable. The aquarium has a good shark tank and tropical fish section that is worth visiting independently of the amusement park. The lakefront walk from the city centre to Särkänniemi is one of Tampere's better routes, taking about 20 minutes through Koskipuisto park.
