Tampere's indoor market hall, built in 1901, is one of the best preserved in Finland. The hall trades in local produce, fish, meat, and baked goods, with a particular emphasis on things that are either Finnish or locally made. Look for mustamakkara (blood sausage, Tampere's unofficial city food), fresh lake fish, and various preserved game products.
The hall is busiest on weekday mornings and Saturday. Several stalls operate as small cafes with counter seating — a good cheap lunch option in the city centre. The building itself is attractive: a long, light-filled hall with a cast-iron structure and high windows.
