Tampere's Neo-Renaissance city hall sits at the edge of the central square (Tampere Central Square) and dates from 1890. The building was designed by Georg von Bonsdorff and is one of the more accomplished 19th-century civic buildings in Finland — less austere than the prevailing National Romantic style and more self-consciously grand.
The Central Square in front of the hall is Tampere's main public open space and regularly hosts markets, outdoor events, and ice skating in winter. The square is framed by the city hall on one side and the Hämeenkatu main street running east toward the station, making it a natural gathering point and orientation landmark.
