Pyynikki beach on Lake Pyhäjärvi is the most popular city swimming spot in Tampere, a sandy stretch below the Pyynikki ridge with good access to the lake and a traditional wooden changing house. The water quality is monitored and generally clean. At peak summer the beach gets busy; mornings and weekdays are quieter.
The walk to the beach from the Pyynikki Observation Tower takes about 10 minutes downhill through forest. The combination of the tower, the munkki café, and a swim on the beach makes a perfect half-day.
