Tampere Central Library Metso

Tampere's central library, designed by Reima and Raili Pietilä and completed in 1986, is one of the most architecturally celebrated public buildings in Finland. The plan is based on the shape of a capercaillie (metso in Finnish) — a native grouse — which gives the building its informal name and accounts for its distinctive curving, organic form. The interior is equally impressive: a multi-level space with flowing shapes, natural light, and a large reading hall.

The library functions as an active public space and welcomes visitors even if you are not borrowing books. The Finnish architecture section of the bookshop is particularly good. The building is best appreciated by walking through it rather than photographing it from outside.
