Bendlerblock

Bendlerblock is a sober military office complex with one of Berlin's most important resistance memorials. It was here that Claus von Stauffenberg and other officers involved in the 20 July 1944 plot against Hitler were executed after the attempted coup failed.

The German Resistance Memorial Center tells that story in detail, covering military, civilian, religious, and student opposition to the Nazi regime. The courtyard is quiet and stark, and it is worth visiting if you want Berlin's 20th-century history without the scale and crowds of the better-known memorials.
