Winterfeldtplatz

The twice-weekly market that holds Schöneberg together — Saturday morning here is the neighbourhood at its best

Winterfeldtplatz is where Schöneberg happens. The square hosts a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and the Saturday version in particular is one of the best in Berlin — not the biggest, but well-stocked and genuinely local in character. The stalls sell seasonal vegetables and fruit from regional farms, cheeses, bread and pastries, meat, fish, flowers, and olives. The surrounding cafés — particularly the ones on the square itself and around the northern edge — open early on market days and fill with people who have bought a coffee and a pastry and have settled in for the morning. It has a relaxed, unhurried rhythm that distinguishes it from the more tourist-oriented city markets.

Wednesday's market is smaller and less of an event but more practical — more vegetables, fewer people standing around eating cheese. Saturday is the social occasion: the surrounding streets between Winterfeldtplatz and Nollendorfplatz have a concentration of brunch spots, bakeries, and wine bars that makes it easy to extend a morning at the market into an afternoon. The square has a central fountain and a modest amount of grass, neither of which is the point; the point is the combination of the market, the coffee, and a neighbourhood that has remained functional and convivial despite the pressures that have hollowed out similar areas elsewhere in the city.
