Preußenpark (Thai Park)

Wilmersdorf park where Thai families run an open-air food market on warm weekends

On warm weekends an ordinary Wilmersdorf park turns into one of Berlin's best street-food markets. Since the 1990s Thai and other Southeast Asian families have gathered here to cook from portable kitchens and folding tables, spreading blankets across the lawn and selling som tam, grilled skewers, sticky rice and curries to whoever turns up. Berliners simply call it Thai Park.

What began as an informal community picnic is now semi-regulated, with the cooks moved to a marked-out area, but the atmosphere survives — cheap, fresh, genuinely homemade food eaten cross-legged on the grass. Come on a sunny Saturday or Sunday from late spring to early autumn; there is nothing to see midweek or in winter.
