Sonnenallee

Long Neukölln street known as Arab Street for its Lebanese bakeries and late-night cafés

The stretch of Sonnenallee running south from Hermannplatz is the spine of Arab Berlin, nicknamed "Arab Street" for its concentration of Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian businesses. Bakeries pile their windows with baklava and knafeh, juice bars press pomegranates to order, shisha cafés stay open past midnight, and grocers spill crates of vegetables onto the pavement.

It is busiest and best in the evening, when families come out to eat and the smell of grilled meat and cardamom coffee hangs over the street. Come hungry: this is some of the best and cheapest Middle Eastern food in the city, served with no concession to tourists.
