Downtown

Detroit's central business district, anchored by Campus Martius

Downtown Detroit is compact and walkable, organised around the radial street pattern Augustus Woodward laid out after the great 1805 fire. Campus Martius sits at its centre, with Woodward Avenue running north and Jefferson running along the river. The Financial District holds the Penobscot, Guardian, and Ally Detroit Center skyscrapers, and the Capitol Park area has seen significant renovation of historic loft buildings.

The riverfront south of Jefferson is now lined with the Detroit RiverWalk and Hart Plaza, the city's main event space. Three professional sports venues sit within walking distance — Comerica Park, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena — along with the Fox Theatre, the MGM Grand casino, and Greektown. Most visitors spend at least some time downtown.
