Cathedral Church of St Paul

Unfinished Gothic Revival Episcopal cathedral on Woodward

Address 4800 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

The Cathedral Church of St Paul, the Episcopal cathedral for the Diocese of Michigan, sits on Woodward Avenue at the southern edge of Midtown. The architect Ralph Adams Cram designed it in 1908 in English Gothic Revival, but the planned central tower and west towers were never built — the cathedral has the strange, truncated profile of an unfinished medieval church. The interior is unusually intact, with notable Tiffany and Connick stained glass.

It is open to visitors most days outside service times. The cathedral sits opposite the Detroit Institute of Arts and makes a quick architectural stop on a Midtown walk.
