Seven mirrored towers cluster on the Detroit River, the tallest a 73-storey hotel that is the third-tallest all-hotel building in North America. The complex was built by a Henry Ford II–led consortium in 1977 to anchor downtown renewal and bought by General Motors in 1996 as their world headquarters. The interior atrium is famously hard to navigate — the round footprint and curved corridors confuse even regulars.
The waterfront-facing Wintergarden has a glass wall with one of the best views in Detroit and a pleasant café. The RiverWalk runs right past the back door. GM has announced plans to demolish two towers and renovate the rest as residential — check before planning a visit.
