Guardian Building

Art Deco skyscraper with a famously vivid tiled lobby

Address 500 Griswold St, Detroit, MI 48226

The Guardian Building is the most photogenic interior in Detroit. The Aztec-influenced lobby is faced with Pewabic and Rookwood tile, with a vaulted ceiling painted by Ezra Winter showing the figures of Industry, Commerce, and Agriculture. The 40-storey orange-brick tower stands out among the surrounding limestone skyscrapers in the Financial District.

The lobby is open to the public during business hours and there is no charge to walk in and look up. A small gift shop sells postcards and Pewabic tile. Combine with the nearby Penobscot Building and Buhl Building for a quick Art Deco walking tour.

A story
When the Guardian Building opened in 1929 it was nicknamed the 'Cathedral of Finance'. The interior tile was made by Pewabic Pottery and the architect Wirt Rowland insisted on orange brick rather than the standard limestone, against fierce client objection.
