Michigan Theatre

Opulent 1920s movie palace now used as a parking garage

Address 220 Bagley Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

The Michigan Theatre is the strangest sight in downtown Detroit. The 1926 movie palace by C. Howard Crane, once one of the grandest in the country, was carved up in 1976 to keep the surrounding office building viable — and the auditorium was converted into a multi-level parking garage. The ornate plaster, the proscenium arch, and the gilt details remain visible above the parked cars.

The garage is open during business hours to anyone with a few dollars to park. Drive in, look up, walk around. There is no other room quite like it.

A story
Henry Ford's first workshop, where he built the Quadricycle in 1896, occupied a brick shed on this very block. The 4,000-seat Michigan Theatre opened in 1926 on the same site. Today the theatre's gilt-ceilinged auditorium is the most decorated parking garage in America.
