Ford Piquette Avenue Plant

The factory where the Model T was born

Address 461 Piquette Ave, Detroit, MI 48202

The Piquette Plant was Ford's second factory and the place where the Model T was developed and first built between 1908 and 1910. The building is a fairly modest three-storey wooden mill, but inside is the room where Ford and a small team designed the car that put America on wheels. The collection includes early Fords, Model Ts, and the original experimental room recreated as it was.

It sits in the Milwaukee Junction industrial district north of Midtown, an area that once held a cluster of early auto factories. Open daily April through November and Friday through Sunday in winter.

A story
The Model T was designed in a small experimental room on the third floor of this plant in 1907 and 1908, before Henry Ford moved production to his much larger Highland Park factory and pioneered the assembly line. Stand in the room where Ford and his engineers worked behind a locked door for months.
